Trip-Day 2

Mount Vernon - George Washington's Plantation home

This was a beautiful and amazing place. After a quick metro trip and not as short bus ride, we came to the plantation home of George Washington. I don't know what I expected, but what I got out of this day was a profound appreciation for the great man who helped found our nation. He was primarily a family man, an inventive farmer and a true visionary. The plantation includes a working farm that operates using the same inventive methods used back then.

I could go on for hours! But I'll let the pictures speak for me.

Beautiful gardens:

Great fall festival with activities like apple roasting, music, farming demonstrations, horse shoeing, and a talk with George Washington:

Meeting George:

Did you know they did not shake hands then? They bowed.

During his talk he said to a young lady in the audience, "Excuse me miss, I do not wish to embarras you as you are truly beautiful...but are you royalty?" I heard the girl giggle and turned around to realize it's my daughter, Katie. She said no. He then said, "You have the most lovely jewelry on your teeth, so I thought you were royalty." No lie, it was too funny! (He was speaking of course, about her braces on her teeth. Guess he hadn't seen those before.)

George Washington brought to our country many new and effective farming techniques. One idea was his 16 sided hay barn. The hay was put on the second floor where horses ran around the perimter loosing the wheat and chaff (I have NO clue what I am talking about, but it was cool!) The floor boards had large cracks in them and the seperated chaff fell through the floor to the basement. Here is the barn:

Here is the basement/bottom floor that it all falls down into:
